Materials
There’s no single best paving, only the one that suits your house, your light and how much upkeep you want. Here’s the honest version of each.
Dense and near enough non-porous. It doesn’t drink in barbecue grease, doesn’t go green the first wet autumn, and a jet wash brings it straight back. Large formats need a full mortar bed and a primer on the back of every slab — skip that and you get hollow spots.
Warmer, more variation, and it takes a curve better than anything else. Riven or sawn, and it suits older stone properties round Huddersfield far better than a grey porcelain would.
Darker, tighter grain and good grip underfoot. Works well on paths, side returns and shaded areas where a pale slab would just show every mark.
The build
It’s the same order every time. Skip one and it shows within a couple of winters.
Down to a proper formation level, not just enough to lose the old slabs under a new layer. Spoil goes on the wagon.
MOT stone laid and compacted in passes. Depth depends on the ground and whether anything is driving over it.
Every fall worked out away from the house, into a channel drain or a gravel margin where it needs one.
Solid mortar bed, slabs primed on the back. No five-blob dot-and-dab that goes hollow and cracks.
Brush-in jointing or hand pointing, edges restrained so nothing creeps outwards over the years.
Paving washed down, tools gone, gates shut. You get it back finished, not nearly finished.

The question nobody asks until the first proper downpour. On a Huddersfield hillside it matters more than the slab you choose.

Questions
Porcelain if you want it to stay looking as it does on day one with the least work. Sandstone if you want warmth, variation and curves, or if the house is older stone and grey would look wrong against it. We’ll bring samples and hold them against the house.
It depends on the ground and the use. Soft or clay ground wants more, and anything a vehicle crosses wants considerably more. The point is that it’s dug to the depth the ground actually needs and compacted in layers, rather than a set number quoted off a page.
Yes, and most of ours are. It becomes a question of whether you cut into the slope with a retaining wall, build out with sleepers, or split it into two levels with steps between. We’ll show you what each one looks like and what each one costs.
Standing water and shade. If a patio holds water because the falls are wrong or the jointing has failed, algae takes hold. Get the falls right, use the right jointing compound and keep the drainage clear and it stays clean with an occasional wash.
Yes — steps, retaining walls, rendered or sleeper edging and matching risers are all part of the same job. It’s much better done in one go than added on later by someone else.
