Artificial grass lawn with gravel margins in a new build garden at sunset

Artificial grass

Astroturf in Huddersfield, laid on a base that lasts

No mud, no mowing and no bare patches under the trampoline. The grass is the last thing that goes down — everything before it is what decides how it looks in five years.

The build-up

Six layers. Skip one and it ripples within a year.

Most bad artificial grass isn’t bad grass — it’s a bad base. Here’s everything that goes in before a roll comes off the van.

01

Old lawn stripped out

Turf, roots and soft topsoil dug out and carted away. Laying grass over an old lawn is why it ends up soft and uneven.

02

Compacted stone base

MOT stone in layers, whacked between each one. This is the layer that decides whether it ripples in two years.

03

Grano or sharp sand screed

Screeded and levelled to a smooth finish so every undulation is gone before the grass goes anywhere near it.

04

Weed membrane

Laid over the base so nothing works its way up through the pile.

05

Joints glued and hidden

Joining tape and adhesive, pile direction matched. A good joint is one you can’t find afterwards.

06

Edges fixed and sand brushed

Fixed to timber or paving edges, then kiln-dried sand brushed in to weight it and stand the pile up.

Where it works best

Good for some gardens, not for every garden

We’d rather tell you now than take the money and let you find out. Artificial grass is brilliant in the right spot and a compromise in the wrong one.

  • Shaded gardensWhere real grass never establishes properly and you’re fighting moss every year.
  • Dogs and kidsNo mud through the back door, no worn tracks, usable all winter.
  • Small or awkward gardensWhere mowing is more hassle than the lawn is worth.
  • North-facing slopesCommon round here, and the hardest place to keep real turf alive.
  • Less good in full sun all dayIt warms up. Worth planning shade or keeping some real lawn.

Questions

Artificial grass questions

Will artificial grass be alright with dogs?

Yes, and dogs are one of the main reasons people ring us. It drains straight through, it doesn’t churn into mud in winter and it can be hosed down. The base and the edge fixings are what stop a dog lifting a corner, which is why we don’t skimp on either.

How long does artificial grass last?

The grass itself is the easy part — a decent pile lasts many years. What ages badly is a poor base. Ripples, dips and lifting edges are base failures, not grass failures.

Does it get hot in summer?

In direct sun it does warm up more than real grass. Shade, a hose down, or planning some planting or a canopy over part of it all help. Worth knowing before you commit the whole garden to it.

Can you lay it over my existing lawn?

We won’t. Laying over old turf means the organic matter underneath rots down and the surface goes soft and lumpy within a season. It gets dug out properly.

Does it drain, or will I get puddles?

It drains through the backing into the stone base underneath. Puddles come from a base that wasn’t compacted or levelled properly, or from ground with nowhere to drain to — which is something we look at before quoting.

Can you do the astroturf and the patio together?

Best way to do it. The levels have to line up where they meet and the drainage has to work across both. Doing them in one visit means no awkward step and no gap along the joint.
